the perks of being teacher-dyke
2008-05-15 | 5:20 p.m.

I am currently teaching Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower to my "honors" freshmen and one section of repeater freshmen.

This has been a very nerve-wracking process. I love this book; each time I read it I feel some sort of awakening, a drive to connect, to communicate, to live live passionately. What if they make me hate it? What if they whine and complain and talk nonstop smack about it?

For the most part, they are reading it with the same zest and awe that I always have.
They can't put their copies down.

It is incredible.

Tomorrow I assign them their Mix CD/Tape/Playlist assignment.
After we spend class analyzing the lyrics to "Asleep" (and a few other songs by Nick Drake and Suzanne Vega and Ride and Moody Blues and some other folks).

I fucking love my life, sometimes.
